The U.S. Navy has successfully removed a P-8A Poseidon spy plane from Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii, two weeks after it crashed into the environmentally sensitive area. The plane overshot the runway during bad weather, landing in the bay which is home to coral reefs and a shark breeding ground. A team of military and civilian experts worked for over 12 hours to carefully lift the aircraft out of the water, minimizing impact to the coral. Most of the fuel on board had been removed prior to the salvage operation, reducing the risk of environmental damage. The cost of the salvage operation is estimated to be around $1.5 million.
