"Rare Co-Emergence: 2024 Cicada Swarms to Hit Multiple States"

Brood XIX, a 13-year cycle of periodical cicadas, is expected to emerge in parts of Maryland and Virginia this spring, alongside Brood XIII in the Midwest. This event, described as "major" by entomologist Mike Raupp, will see billions, if not trillions, of cicadas emerging in a widespread area, with decibel levels reaching as high as 100. The cicadas will start to appear when soil temperatures reach the mid-60s, with their activity peaking between mid-May and mid-June.
