USDA Proposes Stricter Standards for "Humane" and Antibiotic-Free Meat Labels

The USDA is considering implementing higher standards for meat marketed as "humanely raised" or antibiotic-free, amid criticism that such claims are often exaggerated to justify higher prices. The agency will revise guidelines to recommend stronger documentation and encourage third-party certification to verify animal-raising claims. The USDA will also begin a sampling project to assess antibiotic residues in cattle destined for the "raised without antibiotics" market.
