The Covid-19 public health emergency in the US ends on Thursday, which will affect everything from free vaccines and tests to food assistance programs. Work requirements for federal food assistance programs that were paused during the pandemic will return in more than two dozen mostly Republican-controlled states. The CDC will lose access to some of the surveillance data it used to assess Covid risk, requiring it to shelve its Covid-19 Community Levels metric. However, Congress extended pandemic-era rules once tied to the emergency through 2024, allowing expanded telehealth access in the Medicare program.
