Court Victory Ends Family Separation at the Border, but Trauma Lingers

A federal judge in San Diego has approved a settlement that prohibits the separation of migrant families at the border for crossing illegally. The settlement, resulting from a 2018 lawsuit by the ACLU, blocks the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy that separated over 5,000 children from their parents without a plan for reunification. Under the settlement, crossing the border illegally will not be grounds for family separation for the next eight years, and aid will be provided to families who were previously separated. Sixty-eight children remain unlocated.
