"US Increases Aid to Sudan, Sanctions RSF Leader for Human Rights Abuses"

The United States has imposed sanctions on the deputy leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur, a paramilitary group involved in the fighting in Sudan, over human rights abuses. The U.S. has also announced over $160 million in additional humanitarian aid to help people in Sudan. The United Nations' migration agency reports that more than 5 million people have been displaced by the fighting, with over 400,000 fleeing to Chad. The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, made the announcement during a visit to Chad's border with Sudan, where she met with Sudanese refugees. The U.S. is already Sudan's top donor, and the latest aid commitment brings its total commitment for the 2023 fiscal year to almost $710 million.
