Russia's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, has suggested that it may be time to reduce the number of American journalists in Russia, following the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges. Antonov claimed that the US had threatened retaliation if Gershkovich was not released, and that it might be time to show "reciprocity" by reducing the number of American journalists in Russia to the number of Russian journalists in the US. The US has called for Gershkovich's release and has determined that Russia has "wrongfully detained" him.
