Russia Considers Prisoner Swap for Jailed Journalist Evan Gershkovich

The Kremlin has acknowledged "certain contacts" with the United States regarding a potential prisoner exchange involving jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and Russian national Vladimir Dunaev, who is held in pretrial detention in Ohio on federal cybercrime charges. The timing of recent visits by the U.S. ambassador to Gershkovich and Russian embassy staff to Dunaev has raised speculation about ongoing negotiations. Gershkovich has been detained in Russia since March on espionage charges, which he and the U.S. government deny. The State Department has also determined that former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan is wrongfully detained in Russia on espionage charges.
