Kim Davis Ordered to Pay $100,000 for Denying Same-Sex Marriage License

Kim Davis, the former county clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky, has been ordered to pay $100,000 in damages to a same-sex couple whom she denied a marriage license based on her religious beliefs. A federal jury awarded $50,000 to each of the plaintiffs, David Ermold and David Moore, in the case Ermold v. Davis. Davis was found personally liable for violating the plaintiffs' constitutional rights. However, no damages were awarded in the case Yates v. Davis. The plaintiffs have 30 days to petition for attorney fees and costs to be covered. Davis plans to appeal the decision, arguing for religious accommodation under the First Amendment and the overturning of the Obergefell v. Hodges decision.
