New Orleans Council Urges Tax Agencies to Pause Property Tax Increases

The New Orleans City Council has sent a letter to major taxing agencies in the city, asking them to consider not completely rolling forward their millages this year, as property taxes have spiked by an average of 20% or more. The council wants to ease the burden on residents who are already facing an insurance crisis. While the council has agreed not to roll its millages forward, it is unclear if the agencies will follow suit. The Orleans Parish Assessor's Office is required to re-evaluate home assessments every four years, and residents have until August 15 to have their assessments reviewed if they received a high assessment.
