Clear conditions in Minnesota tonight are expected to make the northern lights, or aurora borealis, visible in large portions of the state. Skies should be clear for good viewing conditions, with the peak of the solar storm expected around midnight to 3 a.m. Friday. To optimize the viewing experience, it is recommended to get away from light pollution and have a clear view to the north. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is recognized as the closest International Dark Sky Sanctuary for the best viewing. However, even stepping outside your home might offer a chance to see the northern lights.
