Premature fuze triggers midair explosion over I-5 during Camp Pendleton live-fire
TL;DR
An investigation found that a round fired during Camp Pendleton's live-fire demonstration for the Marines’ 250th anniversary detonated in midair after its fuze activated prematurely, sending shrapnel onto the I-5 freeway and puncturing a California Highway Patrol vehicle; officials call it a “one-in-a-million” malfunction with no definitive explanation.
