Biden administration aims to further reduce Guantanamo detainee population.

The population of Guantanamo Bay detention facility has been reduced to 30 after the transfer of an Algerian detainee to Algeria. The Biden administration is considering options, including a possible executive order, to further reduce the number of detainees and ultimately close the facility by the end of Biden's current term. The biggest challenge for reducing the population is finding places for the detainees to go. Biden plans to reverse an executive order by former President Donald Trump that preserved the option of bringing additional prisoners to Guantanamo and is likely to amend or supplant an executive order signed by former President Barack Obama that outlines the administration’s processes for handling detainee cases.
