Capitol Hill Showdown: Hardline Republicans Target House Speaker McCarthy
TL;DR
Hardline Republicans, led by Rep Matt Gaetz, are seeking to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy after he pushed through a last-minute spending bill with support from Democrats to avert a government shutdown. Gaetz, a vocal critic of McCarthy, plans to file a motion to vacate against the Speaker, citing the need for "trustworthy" leadership. McCarthy's decision to rely on Democratic votes for the spending bill has angered hard-right Republicans, who view it as a betrayal. The outcome of Gaetz's challenge remains uncertain, but McCarthy dismisses it as personal and vows to continue governing.
