Chief Justice Roberts Declines Meeting on Alito Ethics Controversy

Chief Justice John Roberts declined a request from Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse to discuss Justice Samuel Alito's recusal from upcoming Supreme Court cases related to Jan. 6 and the 2020 election. Roberts cited the lack of precedent and the importance of judicial independence. Alito, who has faced scrutiny over flags associated with the "Stop the Steal" movement flown at his homes, stated he will not recuse himself, attributing the flags to his wife.
