Controversial 'Bathroom Bill' Passes in Iowa and Idaho

Iowa House lawmakers passed a bill requiring transgender students to use the bathroom of their sex assigned at birth in a 57-39 vote. Supporters of the bill argue that it will protect children, while opponents say it will not protect transgender students and will only make them feel unwelcome. The bill allows students who receive written permission from their parents to submit a request that a school gives them access to alternate facilities. The bill lists alternate facilities as being single, unisex, or faculty restrooms, or changing areas.
