DOJ takes legal action against Tennessee's ban on transgender youth care.

The US Justice Department has filed a complaint against Tennessee's recently enacted bill that prohibits gender-affirming care for minors, arguing that it violates the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause by discriminating on the basis of both sex and transgender status. The legislation, signed into law by the Republican governor last month, prohibits health care providers from performing or administering medical procedures to minors for the purpose of enabling them to identify with a purported identity inconsistent with their sex. The DOJ has asked the court to issue an immediate order to block the law from taking effect on July 1.
