Florida Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick resigns as ethics panel moves toward sanctions

Florida Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress just as the House Ethics Committee prepared to issue sanctions over allegations of theft and campaign-finance misconduct, including improper use of nearly $5 million in FEMA funds; the panel had found substantial evidence of wrongdoing and held a rare public trial, while her federal trial was postponed to February 2027, and a special election will be held to fill the seat.
