"Florida's New Abortion Ban Sparks Political Divide Among Republicans"

Several Republican representatives from Broward and Palm Beach counties broke with their party and voted against a new law that would ban almost all abortions in Florida after the sixth week of pregnancy. The new law was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis and is set to go into effect after the state Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of a 2022 law banning almost all abortions after 15 weeks. Abortion restrictions are important to a politically active share of the Republican base, but it has become a politically fraught election issue for Republicans in many places, especially in Florida's more liberal, Democratic communities in the southeast part of the state.
