Georgia's Redrawn Congressional Map Approved in Special Redistricting Session

Georgia's special session to redraw federal and state legislative maps is likely to end soon, with a Republican-favored congressional map advancing in the state House committee. The new map creates a Black-majority district by rearranging Democratic voting hubs in the Atlanta area without affecting the current 9-5 Republican majority in the state's congressional delegation. However, challenges are expected in court, arguing that the Republican-controlled General Assembly violated the federal court order. The committee also approved a new state Senate map, while a new House map could reduce the GOP majority by one or two seats. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones will hold a hearing on December 20 to consider the legislative maps.
