GOP secures supermajority in Wisconsin Senate with special election win

Republican Dan Knodl won the special election for an open state Senate seat in Wisconsin, giving the GOP a supermajority in the upper chamber and the necessary votes to impeach state officials. Knodl defeated Democratic attorney Jodi Habush Sinykin by just under 2 points. The Republican candidate’s win coincided with that of Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz in the state’s high-profile Supreme Court race, giving the bench a liberal tilt for the first time in 15 years. Knodl said last month that he “certainly would consider” supporting efforts to impeach Protasiewicz.
