Government Shutdown Threatens Food Security for Millions

President Joe Biden and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack have warned that a government shutdown could lead to dire consequences, including the loss of food benefits for nearly 7 million low-income women and children. Biden blamed a small group of extreme House Republicans for not living up to a previous spending deal, which could impact nutritional benefits, hazardous waste site inspections, and fair housing law enforcement. Vilsack stated that the majority of participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) would see an immediate reduction in benefits, while the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could be affected afterward. Additionally, farm loans, rural homebuyer loans, and the paychecks of over 50,000 Department of Agriculture workers would be impacted. The Republican-controlled House may advance spending cuts this week, potentially leading to a partial government shutdown if both chambers fail to agree.
