John Thune Elected Senate GOP Leader, Succeeding McConnell
TL;DR
John Thune has been elected as the new Senate Republican leader, succeeding Mitch McConnell. Thune, who was the Republican whip, won against Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Rick Scott in a secret ballot vote. Despite Scott's efforts to align himself with Trump and gain endorsements from Trump-aligned figures, Trump did not endorse any candidate. All candidates expressed support for Trump's use of recess appointments to fill federal vacancies. The leadership election was described as energetic, with candidates emphasizing their loyalty to Trump's agenda.
