Kansas Governor Laura Kelly vetoed four Republican bills aimed at restricting transgender rights, including measures to end gender-affirming care for children and teens, prevent transgender people from using bathrooms and other public facilities associated with their gender identities, and prevent jails from housing transgender prisoners in units consistent with their gender identities. Kelly's vetoes highlighted the state's status as a battleground for LGBTQ+ rights, with GOP lawmakers targeting such rights through several hundred proposals. At least 14 states with GOP-led legislatures have enacted laws against gender-affirming care for minors, and at least seven have bathroom laws, mostly focusing on schools.
