Kansas Legislature Passes Controversial Bills Targeting Transgender Rights and Abortion.

The Kansas Legislature passed a bill that restricts transgender people from using bathrooms that align with their gender identities and prevents them from altering the name or gender on their driver’s licenses. The legislation also declares that “sex” means “biological” sex, “either male or female, at birth.” The bill is expected to be vetoed by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, but the Republican supermajorities in both chambers suggest that backers could override the veto. LGBTQ+ rights advocates have warned that the measure would legally erase transgender people and deny recognition to non-binary, gender-fluid and gender-nonconforming people.
