Kansas Overrides Governor's Veto to Enact Transgender Athlete Ban

Kansas has banned transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports from kindergarten through college after lawmakers in both chambers of the legislature, in which Republicans have supermajorities, overrode a veto from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. Republicans in the state said the law would protect the fairness of women’s sports, arguing it upholds the protections handed down in Title IX, the federal civil rights law that bars discrimination based on sex in educational programs. At least 18 other states have banned transgender athlete participation in some fashion, according to the Movement Advancement Project.
