Kevin McCarthy Declines Re-Nomination for House Speaker

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has instructed his colleagues not to re-nominate him for the position after some of his allies indicated that many Republicans would back him over Majority Leader Steve Scalise or Rep. Jim Jordan. McCarthy's allies are expected to move forward with their efforts, although doubts remain about McCarthy's ability to secure the necessary votes. Jordan currently has 47 House Republican supporters, while Scalise has 31. McCarthy's ousting as speaker was the first in US history to occur through a floor vote.
