Lawsuits Challenge North Carolina Senate Map for Racial Gerrymandering

North Carolina is facing a lawsuit over newly redrawn state Senate maps that allegedly dilute the power of Black residents and violate the Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit claims that the redistricting plan is part of a history of racial discrimination and voter suppression in the state. The newly approved redrawn maps for the state's lower chamber could also give Republicans an advantage in the 2024 elections. The plaintiffs argue that the new Senate maps restrict Black voters and fail to meet the requirements of the Voting Rights Act. They have filed a motion to expedite proceedings.
