Mistaken Identities: WH Spokesperson's Blunders with Hawaii Senators

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre mispronounced the names of Hawaii's Democratic senators and misgendered one of them during a press conference addressing the devastating wildfires in Hawaii. Senator Mazie Hirono and Senator Brian Schatz had called on President Biden to approve a disaster declaration for the wildfires, which killed at least 96 people. The White House later attributed a statement to Biden expressing condolences and offering federal assistance. The wildfire is the worst-ever natural disaster in Hawaii's history and the deadliest since the 1918 Cloquet fire in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
