New York State's Varied Responses to Housing Asylum Seekers

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is considering using state properties, including SUNY and CUNY campuses, to temporarily house asylum seekers arriving in the state. The state budget has allocated $1 billion to local communities to help with the cost of housing asylum seekers. Republican governors in Texas and Arizona have sent thousands of asylum seekers to New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Republican county executives statewide criticized the Biden administration for failing to provide more information on the asylum seekers and failing to provide more funding to deal with them. The state is looking for potential longer-term housing for the asylum seekers.
