"Newsom Bolsters Cal Guard Presence at Border to Tackle Fentanyl Crisis"

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a 50% increase in the deployment of California National Guard members to the border to combat the fentanyl crisis and drug trafficking. The expansion will bring the number of Cal Guard service members at ports of entry along the US-Mexico border from 40 to 60, allowing them to assist US Customs and Border Protection in narcotics search operations. This move builds on previous efforts that resulted in a 594% increase in seized fentanyl in California last year. The majority of fentanyl is smuggled into the country at ports of entry by US citizens.
