North Carolina Republicans Pass Controversial Abortion Ban

North Carolina's Republican-controlled state Senate has passed a bill that would ban most abortions after 12 weeks, which Democratic Governor Roy Cooper has vowed to veto. However, the GOP supermajority in the legislature can override him. The bill would provide exceptions in the case of rape and incest through 20 weeks of pregnancy or in the event of a “life-limiting anomaly” through 24 weeks. The bill would also prohibit any health care provider who objects to abortion “on moral, ethical, or religious grounds” from being required to participate in medical procedures that would result in an abortion.
