North Dakota Governor Signs Controversial Transgender Sports Bills

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has signed two bills into law that ban transgender girls and women from joining female sports teams in K-12 and college. At least 19 other states have imposed similar restrictions on transgender athletes. The Biden administration has proposed a rule to forbid outright bans on transgender athletes, but it still faces a lengthy approval process. Burgum vetoed a nearly identical bill in 2021, but lawmakers wrote new legislation to replicate and expand that bill, which is now law.
