North Dakota restricts bathroom access for transgender individuals

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has signed a new law that prohibits transgender people from using bathrooms, locker rooms, or shower rooms that match their gender identity in some state-run facilities. The law affects dorms, housing controlled by the state board of higher education, penitentiaries, and correctional facilities for youths and adults. Transgender or gender-nonconforming people would need staff approval to use the restroom or shower room of their choice. This is one of over 450 bills attacking the rights of transgender people introduced in state legislatures this year, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
