"N.Y. Gov. Hochul Takes Action: Establishes Slavery Reparations Commission for Racial Justice"

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation to create a commission that will study the history of slavery in the state and consider reparations. The committee, consisting of nine members, will have a year to draft a report before presenting it to the public. Activists and leaders have praised the move, highlighting the ongoing impacts of slavery, such as Black poverty and maternal mortality. New York is the second state, after California, to undertake a study on reparations.
