NY State Budget Delay Causes Subway Fare Hike Postponement and Migrant Crisis Funding Agreement

New York state politicians have agreed to provide $1 billion to New York City to cover the costs of the migrant crisis, which is projected to exceed $4.3 billion by mid-2024. The expenditure, to be disbursed over the next year, represents a mixed victory for New York Mayor Eric Adams, who has been lobbying President Biden to provide the billions of dollars necessary to avoid sweeping budget cuts in the city. The city is still waiting on approval for $654 million in grant money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency expected sometime before the end of May.
