New York City Mayor Eric Adams has proposed a "private residence" plan to pay everyday New Yorkers to shelter migrants in their own homes as the city struggles to find beds for the thousands of asylum seekers still flooding into the city. Adams did not offer specifics on how the plan would work, but suggested that homeowners could receive compensation for hosting asylum seekers. The city will also pay places of worship a nightly rate of about $125 for each asylum seeker. The newly announced faith-based plan has the capacity to house roughly 1,000 migrants initially.
