Ohio Elections Officials and Ex-AGs Speak Out Against Proposed Constitutional Amendment Threshold Increase

County elections officials in Ohio are urging state lawmakers to reject a proposal to schedule an August special election to decide a constitutional amendment proposal backed by Republican state lawmakers. They argue that such a contest would be unreasonably expensive on a per-ballot basis, threatens to further exhaust elections workers, and could leave a massive constitutional question in the hands of a thin turnout. If passed by a simple majority of voters in August, future constitutional amendments would need 60% of voters’ support to pass.
