Pentagon Takes Action to Strengthen Classified Information Controls

A review of Pentagon policies and procedures ordered by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III concluded that while there is no systemic problem in keeping classified information secure, the security and oversight measures have failed to keep pace with the proliferation of military facilities and personnel handling such information. The review found that the growth in military facilities and personnel since 9/11 has outpaced the military's ability to keep information secure. The review recommends increased spending, additional steps, and more personnel to tighten security, including stricter measures to prevent the use of electronic devices in classified workspaces. The review was prompted by accusations against an Air National Guardsman who leaked top-secret documents.
