SCOTUS demands Michigan's response in ballot-access fight

SCOTUS has ordered Michigan officials to file a response by noon Wednesday in an emergency appeal over the Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan ballot initiative, which would require U.S. citizenship to vote, regular voter-roll reviews, and photo IDs but failed to appear on the November ballot after a two-vote deadlock by the Board of State Canvassers. The Court’s intervention follows delays in the Michigan Supreme Court; signature reviews showed shortfalls (612 of 1,000 validated by the Bureau of Elections, 626 of 1,000 by the canvassers). Absentee ballots go out Sept. 24, and Justice Kavanaugh will decide next steps after Michigan’s reply.
