Supreme Court Decisions Impact American Elections and Redistricting.

The US Supreme Court has rejected the "independent state legislature" theory, which would have given state lawmakers unchecked power over federal elections. The 6-3 majority vote dismissed the theory, which would have allowed state legislatures to set rules for federal elections and draw congressional maps warped by partisan gerrymandering. The case concerned a voting map drawn by the North Carolina Legislature that was initially rejected as a partisan gerrymander by the state’s Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court has never endorsed the independent state legislature theory, but four of its conservative members have issued opinions that seemed to take it very seriously.
