Supreme Court rules in favor of New Jersey in port agency dispute with New York.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that New Jersey can withdraw from the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, a commission created in 1953 with New York to combat organized crime's influence at their joint port. The commission oversees licensing and inspections at the Port of New York and New Jersey and has its own police force. New Jersey lawmakers have said that changes in the industry, including the development of container shipping, have lessened the influence of organized crime at the port and reduced the need for the commission.
