Supreme Court unanimously rules in favor of transgender woman in deportation case

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of a transgender woman, Leon Santos-Zacaria, who is seeking to avoid deportation to Guatemala, where she claims she would face persecution due to her gender identity and sexual orientation. The court found that Santos-Zacaria did not have to exhaust all administrative remedies before appealing to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Justice Department had argued against her, citing her willingness to return to Guatemala, but the Supreme Court rejected this argument, stating that it would create "administrability headaches" and "traps for unwary noncitizens." The case has been remanded for further review.
