Texas Election Law Ruled Unconstitutional, State to Appeal

A judge has ruled that a new election law in Texas, which would dictate how elections are run in Harris County, is unconstitutional. The law, pushed through by Republican lawmakers, was temporarily blocked by the judge but has been put on hold after the Texas Attorney General's Office filed an appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. The law, set to take effect on September 1, was accused of singling out Harris County, a Democratic stronghold, and violating the Texas Constitution. Harris County officials plan to ask the Texas Supreme Court to temporarily block the law while their lawsuit is litigated.
