U.S. Implements Deportation Plan to Reduce Venezuelan Border Influx

The Biden administration plans to deport Venezuelans who entered the U.S. illegally as part of its efforts to reduce unlawful crossings at the southern border. The number of illegal crossings has increased in recent weeks, with Venezuelans accounting for a significant portion. While the administration has previously created policies to provide legal pathways for Venezuelans fleeing the crisis in their country, the decision to deport them reflects the pressure to address the overwhelming number of migrants in cities and reduce illegal crossings. The announcement comes after extending humanitarian protections to nearly 500,000 Venezuelans who arrived in the U.S. between March 2021 and July 2023. However, it is operationally challenging to deport every Venezuelan who crosses the border illegally.
