U.S. imposes sanctions on Russia and Iran for detaining Americans.

The US has imposed sanctions on state-run agencies in Russia and Iran over their roles in wrongfully detaining US citizens. The sanctions target Russia's Federal Security Service and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Intelligence Organization. The Treasury Department also sanctioned four senior officials of the IRGC-IO. The US has previously sanctioned FSB and IRGC officials. The US designated Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan, and at least three Americans and a legal permanent US resident in Iran as wrongfully detained.
