West Virginia Outlaws Child Marriage for Those Under 16

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has signed a bill that bans children under 16 from getting married, while allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to marry with restrictions. The new law requires parental consent and prohibits marrying someone more than four years older. Previously, children under 16 could marry with a judge's waiver. West Virginia had the highest rate of child marriages among the states, and the new law is seen as a step towards reducing domestic violence, unwanted pregnancies, and improving the lives of teens.
