The largest survey of homeless Californians in decades found that losing income is the main reason for homelessness, with a subsidy of as little as $300 a month potentially keeping people off the streets. Addiction and mental health conditions were found to rarely cause homelessness. The study also dispelled myths about homeless people flocking to California cities for warm weather and liberal policies. The researchers proposed expanding rental subsidies and shared housing programs to address the lack of affordable housing for extremely low-income residents.
