Rising Homelessness in the US Reaches Alarming Levels in 2023

Homelessness in the United States has increased by 12% from 2022, reaching its highest level since 2007, according to a report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Over 653,100 people experienced homelessness on a single night in January 2023, with the majority being sheltered. The report highlighted a rise in homelessness among families with children and attributed the increase to factors such as changes in the rental housing market and the winding down of pandemic protections. New York City and Los Angeles had the largest populations of homeless individuals, while California accounted for nearly half of all unsheltered people in the country. HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge emphasized the need for support and solutions to address homelessness.
