Audit Finds MDTA Fails to Collect $818 Million in Tolls and Fees

An audit shows Maryland’s toll agency failed to collect about $818 million in tolls and penalties from both in-state and out-of-state drivers, largely due to not pursuing reciprocity agreements with other states and underutilizing collection efforts. About $669 million had been uncollected for a year or more, with $386 million over three years. Maryland-registered accounts add roughly $907 million in unpaid tolls and fees. MDTA plans to hire outside collectors, push cross-state reciprocity (with Pennsylvania, Virginia, and potentially New York), and expand toll interoperability, while toll increases are not expected before 2029.
